AKANA — Where the Pacific Shapes the Wine
AKANA is Aaron Wines’ love letter to the coast. Named after Aaron Jackson’s great grandmother — part of a family naming story that includes Keola, Aaron’s own Hawaiian name — AKANA is rooted in something personal. The wines it produces are equally so: organically grown Pinot Noir and aromatic whites from vineyards less than 6 miles from the Pacific Ocean, shaped by some of the most extreme maritime conditions in California.
The SLO Coast AVA — California’s Most Coastal Wine Region
The San Luis Obispo Coast AVA — known as the SLO Coast — is one of California’s newest and most exciting wine regions. Established in 2022 it designates vineyards west of the Santa Lucia Mountains that experience the full force of Pacific influence: persistent fog, wind, and cool temperatures that extend the growing season and preserve remarkable natural acidity in the fruit.
Aaron Jackson was instrumental in creating the SLO Coast AVA — he didn’t just make wine here, he helped draw the lines that defined this region for the world. That history is part of every AKANA bottle.
The Wines
We work with a small selection of dedicated growers in the SLO Coast AVA, farming windswept, organically grown sites that produce expressive, site-specific fruit. From these vineyards — guided by a winemaker-owned philosophy that puts quality over volume — we make Pinot Noir with the kind of tension and transparency that only extreme terroir can provide, and aromatic whites that carry the saline, mineral energy of the ocean air right into the glass.
AKANA wines are produced in small quantities and released twice a year to wine club members before going public. If you’ve been drinking Aequorea, this is the same wine — same vineyards, same winemaking, same story. Just a name that fits a little better.
A Name with Roots
AKANA was Aaron’s great grandmother’s name. Alongside Keola — Aaron’s Hawaiian name, which gives its name to our everyday-access label — the naming thread running through Aaron Wines is a family one. These aren’t brand names. They’re people. And the wines carry that weight in every vintage.
